5 Bad Habits to Avoid When You Have Dental Implants

In terms of replacing missing teeth, most dentists consider dental implants to be the most beneficial option. Not only do they look and feel almost exactly like the teeth they’re replacing, but they also have the potential to last for several decades. They could even last for the rest of your life! Here are five bad habits that you should avoid if you want to protect the investment you made in your smile.

Using Your Teeth as Tools

Just like natural teeth, dental implants are strong, but they’re not indestructible. Using them as tools to open bottles or packaging might seem convenient in the moment. Food particles can linger in your mouth, giving bacteria the fuel that they need to inflame your gums and jeopardize your dental implants. Keep your implants and natural teeth healthy by brushing and flossing every day. For extra protection, consider rinsing with an antibacterial mouthwash too.

Avoiding Routine Dental Checkups

Even if all of your teeth have been replaced with dental implants, regular checkups and cleanings are still essential. They give your dentist a chance to check that your implants are still functioning as they should be. If they find any problems, you can get them taken care of early on, making the treatment more successful and affordable.
