Why Did You Decide to Become a Dentist?
Dr. Gong grew up in a small town in South Korea where most people knew one another very well, and it was common to see neighbors struggling with chronic, untreated dental pain. As a young child, she wished she could treat their problems for free, which is why she became interested in the medical/dental field in the 3rd grade. Later, she contacted her hometown dentist and began gaining dental skills and knowledge in preparation for college – and the rest is history. She truly loves her profession and wouldn’t change her career path for anything in the world.
Where Did You Study Dentistry?
Dr. Gong achieved her Doctor of Dental Surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She also extensively trained in implantology during dental school and was one of just eight students selected for advanced implant courses – she even had the opportunity to place them! After graduation, she took six months of mini implant resident courses as well. She has also studied IV Sedation, TMD/occlusion, and periodontology, which is one of the specialties that she is most knowledgeable about.
Today, Dr. Gong pursues as much continuing education as possible on a yearly basis, taking almost 100 courses annually! She loves seeing the great outcomes that come from extensive cases like dental implant, dentures, and new crowns. Dentistry isn’t only about the clinical work – it’s also about building relationships with both the patients and her other staff members! At Accent Family Dentistry, she has seen young children grow from teenagers to adults to parents, and being able to hear their life stories and grow along with them is very rewarding.
Fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists
Dr. Gong is also a GNM (Gneuromuscular Dentistry Practitioner) and a proud member of the following dental organizations:
- American Dental Association
- Academy of General Dentistry
- American Dental Society of Anesthesiology
- Academy of Osseointegration
- North Carolina Dental Society
- Raleigh Wake County Dental Society
Outside of the Dental Office, What Do You Like to Do?
At home, Dr. Gong is married with one child. Her small family loves traveling together and getting to experience different cultures, especially the different environments and food. They also play golf and tennis as much as possible on the weekends and enjoy gardening in their front and back yards each spring. It is always so enjoyable to see plants grow and flowers bloom! Personally, she is also a passionate lifelong learner and never gets tired of studying just about anything, as long as she doesn’t have to take a test at the end.
