Surgical Tooth Extractions in Angier, NC
When a tooth is broken below the gumline, severely decayed, or otherwise cannot be removed with a simple extraction, a surgical approach ensures safe, precise removal with minimal trauma to surrounding tissue.
Precise Surgical Extractions for Complex Cases
A surgical extraction is performed when a tooth cannot be removed using a simple technique. This is typically the case when a tooth has broken off at or below the gumline, has roots that are curved, long, or fused to the bone, or is impacted and has not fully erupted through the gum tissue.
Dr. Brenda Gong makes a small incision in the gum tissue to access the tooth, carefully removes it — sometimes in sections — and then closes the site with dissolvable sutures. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, and sedation is available for patients who experience dental anxiety.
We serve patients from Angier, Fuquay-Varina, Apex, Lillington, Holly Springs, Willow Spring, Coats, and Benson, NC.
When Is a Surgical Extraction Needed?
Surgical extraction is indicated when a tooth is broken at or below the gumline and cannot be grasped with forceps, when roots are curved, dilacerated, or fused to the surrounding bone, when a tooth is partially or fully impacted, or when significant bone loss has occurred around a tooth making it difficult to remove safely. Dr. Gong will review your X-rays and discuss the best approach before any procedure begins.
Aftercare and Healing
Following a surgical extraction, it is important to bite gently on gauze to control bleeding, avoid smoking and drinking through straws for at least 48–72 hours, eat soft foods, and keep the area clean without disturbing the clot. Dissolvable sutures will break down on their own within 1–2 weeks. Dr. Gong will schedule a follow-up visit to ensure proper healing and discuss next steps, including tooth replacement options if applicable.
